Erin - literalism is the refuge of the fearful who want easy answers, whereas you, while still being fearful and dis-illusioned (a good place!) refuse to take refuge in a form of words, but rather face reality squarely. I think the problem lies in this: if we consider that one part of the bible might have been cultural or metaphorical, where do we draw the line on the rest of it? However, as "President Bartlet" showed us, most Christians already chosen which things are to be believed and which are discarded -- they just don't like to admit it. After all, what then would they make political arguments about?

That was one of my favorite shows and I remember the scene. It would be wise for Christians and church goers to reevaluate their views of the Bible. I am not sure they believe what they say they believe. As a lover of Jesus, I struggle with what is a cultural, time bound response to what people think they know about God and what is the real deal.

Ouch:) That would have been really funny, if it wasn't so near the truth, Erin. I'd see it as an invitation to humanity in general and Christians in particular to start using their minds, instead of allowing our minds to abuse us. What say you?
