There is a lot about how the drying up of the climate aided the evolution from a pantheistic spirituality to a male "sky god" (and eventually an "angry male sky god") spirituality. I still don't quite understand why this meant the change from a matri-social culture to a patri-social one. I'm hoping the book will explain that.

I'm feeling -- different. "The Fall" is interesting, somewhat academic, but then it's nice. I'm about 1/3 of the way through it. It's talking about how the end of the ice ages meant that the area in northern Africa where most people lived went from fertile to arid, and how that meant some groups had to move into other group's territory. The beginning of war and a total change in how an otherwise peaceful people lived.

Thanks Sue. The whole thing is interesting to me, and I will return to religion the day they stop insisting that walking away is selfish.

I got "The Fall" at the library yesterday and I'm sooo excited to read it...even though I haven't finished the other yet...here's for some good reading. And maybe the alleviating some of my internal anger!

I think the two different positions also summarise the reason why God is such a goober in religious terms and that most non-religious people don't want much to do with *him*. If God can only be contained within a narrow, rigid, restrictive institution that has since its inception demonised and brutalised people in the name of coercive, powerful control, then who wants that smelly god anyway?

The claim that an open, loving life, and doing good, can only be found in a religious context - bah to that.

I do, however, understand where the Jesuit priest is coming from. Living in community IS hard, most definitely. But I do not think that is the reason why many people have dropped away from organised religion. In fact, I think people are absolutely and utterly THIRSTY for community. We are surely the loneliest people who ever dwelt the planet.

"... and any attempt to look in the mirror will cause religion to run off the road entirely." Quick - everyone take your mirrors off the wall and rush to your nearest road! The sooner it runs itself into a ditch, the better and freer and more able to see the divine - and within, not only without in some rich powerful guy. Bring it on :)
