Frightful

(For those of you who are accustomed to winter weather worse than ours, you have to understand how incredibly unusual this is for our area.)

This really is bad, folks. I'm not exaggerating. It's been snowing all day, but it's impossible to say how much we have now, because of the G70 mph winds. Looking out my window it's drifted to about 3 feet in places. This definitely takes the cake from 2004, primarily because of the high winds here at the west end of the gorge. It's important to note that they don't plow the roads here except on the interstates and highways; we just don't have the equipment or capability. This much snow makes getting around extremely difficult (well, impossible for all but the most experienced or stupidest drivers).

Visibility is down to about 25-50 feet, I'd guess. It's a fog of frozen water hovering in the air. Wind chill is below zero out here (-10) with the strongest gusts. A long stretch of I-84 (the main east-west interstate in Oregon) is closed. The Portland airport is canceling flights right and left. I think they are technically still open and operational, but they haven't had a flight leave in some time now.

We have been almost entirely below freezing for over a week, and local lakes and rivers have formed a crust of ice. Yesterday a couple of idiots were trying to ride motorcycles on the ice of a nearby lake and were arrested after one of their bikes fell in and they were caught trying to retrieve it. On the up side, we have the wonderful beauty of the frozen gorge waterfalls, photos of which can be seen HERE.

It's not just us, either. I heard earlier today that Burlington Northern has closed the entire Amtrak Empire Builders (Chicago - Seattle) route due to high winds and accumulating snow the extent of the route.

So to all of you in the Northern US who are hanging in there through these wild winter storms, I wish you warmth and peace wherever you are.

If you aren't affected by awful weather, be thankful.

We are bracing for freezing rain tonight or tomorrow...I'm really hoping it stays all snow and then changes to rain, but they are not hopeful. This clearly could mean power outages here over the next few days, so if I don't turn up around here, that would be why. Otherwise I'll be online ,as there is nothing else to do. I'm not going out in this, are you crazy?

Oh, and if my weather report isn't sufficiently entertaining, read THIS post by Jim, where he equates bathroom habits with prayer.

Have a good night.

  1. I like talking about the weather. I found this sufficiently entertaining, thanks :)

Wow, dude. Snow three feet high. So are you guys getting plenty of exercise shovelling?

I'm glad your electricity hasn't cut out.

I just read yesterday that 2008 was the 10th hottest year since recordings have begun. Funny, hey!!! :D I think climate change fits our experiences better than global warming, even if it may be true.

  2. One of my coworkers already had 24". They're expecting 24" more tonight. Time to shovel the roof. My relatives in Alaska do that, but I've never seen that happen here.

At my house it's much more sedate we'll probaby had 8" or so by morning. The winds are supposed to hit later. Gusts of 60 mph. Closer to the mountains, they're talking gusts of 90, with white out conditions. I thought we lived in the Pacific Northwest.

I have to drive to the airport at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. I wonder if I'll be able to make it. I'm already cursing under my breath.

  3. Sue, we haven't had to shovel because the wind is blowing it out of our driveway. Not that we would drive anywhere, anyhow. Yes keep good thoughts for my power, please.

I do agree that Global Climate change is a better term. Even if that is the true consensus of events, day to day we're not seeing it. At least not here.

  4. Gary - that's a lot of snow around here. I read your post...and it's true, our cities just aren't equipped for it.

  5. I must say it is really hard for me to imagine that much snow!

    Keep warm.

  6. Erin, my oldest son, who has lived in Chicago for almost four years, referred to northwesterners as babys, and was dismayed that our state and municipal transportation departments are not prepared to respond to it. I told him that we are as well prepared for snow as Chicago is for an earthquake.

  7. Well, if it's blowing out of your driveway and down the street, I feel sorry for the poor bastard who lives at the end of it ;)

  8. HA!! SUE, You are funny!!!!

Erin, we aren't getting the wind, guess we are far enough away from the gorge but we sure got the snow!! And ICE, woke up this morning and could seen the gleen and the smooth layer it has put over everything...not good at all!!

  9. We are in the middle of a blizzard too and all the newscast showed of weather was from your parts the cars slipping and sliding because of the ice. I recognized it as the same sort of things you had posted earlier.

I have a roof rake to get the snow off the roof (like Gary referred to) but I'll wait till the blizzard is done to see how bad the roof is!

  11. Susan - Because there's snow way you're dreaming of a white Christmas?

    Thank you, we're trying!

  12. Gary - That's a good analogy because we are probably far better prepared for an earthquake!

  13. Sue - LOL! We have a forest at the end of it, fortunately!

  14. Donna - I hope your power stays on! We only have the tiniest bit of ice so far. Here's hoping we get more plain snow.

  15. Aphra - I saw your photos on facebook! How much do you have now? We have about 12 official inches but it's mostly in drifts here up to 4 feet high.

Do people slip and slide and drive like idiots up there too? Or is that just us? ;-)

  16. Thanks Jim! Same to you!

  17. It is hard to tell here with the drifting as well. Looks like a couple of feet.

When I was out today (walked to Church) the streets were pretty quiet, so probably most people stayed home. The cars that were out seemed to be driving relatively normally. Nothing like your videos! We are all plowed out now. We're used to snow, so have lots of plowing vehicles!

  18. Holy Moly! I knew it was bad but not that bad. We are having our typical mild weather. I am not bragging, please don't be mad at me. We pay the price for it in every way imaginable (especially rent).

At least your computer didn't freeze!!

    Stay warm

  19. I'm watching the local news online (YEAH!) and I'm praying for y'alls safety!! Looks like you'll have a white Christmas afterall!

It looks like it'll quickly melt off and I'm wondering if there's any talk of flooding the likes of the flood of 1996?

  20. Aphra - I'm glad you are well plowed. That is our downfall here...very few people are able to get out because even the main roads aren't plowed.

  21. Barbara - I'm not mad at people who have nice weather, but I might come down and spend the week with you...if I could GET there!
    ReplyDelete
  22. Cindi - At least your parents will be well prepped for their visit! I sure hope they are able to travel...this is supposed to stick around all week.

  23. From one snowbound survivor to another...Cheers!
We are expecting a white christmas..which for us on the Sunshine Coast, is a rarity.
It just keeps on comin' down...
I must admit, though, that I love it.
Growing up on the coast never allowed for much snowy winters, and I am enjoying it to the hilt!

  24. Cheers to you too! So it's still white up there...wow this is a big one. Be safe and enjoy the snow!

  25. Erin - funny thing is that my parents sent a box a few weeks ago of their winter gear to be used here lol - including their boots - who woulda thunk they'd need them just days before coming here?

    Crazy!!!!

They keep assuring me that their only issue at this point is my sis being able to get them to the airport!
