Day 8 still finds us buried. This has been a hard winter here on the frontier, and we are now longing for spring. Today saw several more inches of snow and ice, but at this moment the wind is calm and all is quiet in the night. We have yet to dig out a wagon to seek provisions, but so far we are well stocked. We have hunkered down with a fire and are faring well. The east side of the cabin still has some leaks we will have to repair, we can right feel the cold coming through.
Earlier today we had near whiteout conditions, but most of the day we could still see our neighbors lamps through the blizzard. It's nice to know we're not in this alone. This afternoon a brave soul trekked from her nearby cabin to bring us baked treats, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
It seems the plans for Christmas may have to be adjusted for the weather, as it does not seem to be clearing up any time soon. Festivities may have to be postponed if no one can travel, as it is today.
I busied myself today cleaning the cabin and preparing for Christmas. Even if we can not travel we will still celebrate. I think tomorrow a friend and her daughters will come here to do some baking, if they can make the journey.
I pray safety for all who are caught in this weather, and also for no serious flooding when we eventually thaw.
Peace for now,
Erin

Praying that you've seen the worst of the weather now and that things will slowly start to warm up for you. Do you have enough food to get through Christmas if you need to?
ReplyDeleteErin, you're gonna hate me for this, but I'm just a bit envious...I kinda enjoy being snowed in and having to hunker down. It's kinda exciting...we're missing out on any interesting weather here in Cincinnati...only going to be 4 degrees tomorrow, but no snow...if you find it in you, please enjoy it for me! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOK...I've been here reading Louis L'Amour books enjoying a bit of the old west thru this storm and must say I absolutely loved how you wrote about it!!! Miss you!!!!
ReplyDeleteLyn - We're fine on food and we can walk to the store. They are saying things MIGHT start to thaw just a bit on the 24th, but not before we get more snow.
ReplyDeleteKari - You're welcome to it, we have lots to share! Just bring a dump truck and you can haul it home and it probably won't even melt along the way!
ReplyDeleteDonna - Westerns! Haha. Thanks, I think! Stay safe and warm.
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for Pa Ingalls and Mr. Edwards to make an appearance at your cabin....fresh on my mind because I checked out from the library a Christmas Collection book edited by Caroline Kennedy that includes a passage from Little House on the Prairie in which Mr. Edwards brings the gifts (candy canes and a penny) on behalf of Santa.
ReplyDeleteAll is dry in St. Louis today, but verrrrry cold. I am so very grateful that I didn't pass any homeless folks camped out on the sidewalk as I walked to the office from the train. I hope and pray people went inside last night.
Thanks for your blog, Erin. I just drop in from time to time, but it always provokes thoughts or warms my heart when I do so.
Grace, peace, and laughter to you and your family this Christmas.
It's wonderful to meet you Gail! I am a fan of Little House and know the scene you mentioned. Thanks for the kind words about my writing. I wish you peace and joy this Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you're still warm and in relatively good spirits (and humor, it seems).
ReplyDeleteWe've been getting snow off and on here since Friday. But it's nothing near the severity you're experiencing.
Jarred - I'm in good spirits as long as I have power and internet!
ReplyDeleteTechnically, you know winter only started yesterday or so!
ReplyDeletePlease don't tell me this is just the beginning!
ReplyDeleteI love the writing of this.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit jealous of the snow, to be honest.
Well, that's another thing we have in common! I love the Little House series! The kids and I have spent months reading them together as they're bedtime reading. They always groan when the chapters up. The other day they were going on and on about Christmas presents and I actually reminded them about what Laura used to receive! She was thrilled with some candy and a coin!
ReplyDeleteI guess the snow's a pain, but at least you'll have a white Christmas this year! I've never had one of those.
Hmm... glad you have power and internet. Which reminds me, next shopping trip, I should get some candles - flashlights...
ReplyDeleteWe got about 6" yesterday, but a good deal of thaw today. Traveling tomorrow, so I hope the window of sun holds.
Stay warm and Merry Christmas.
PS - I always liked Little house, too. :-)
Thank you Lauren! It's good to see you!
ReplyDeleteLyn - It's funny what Christmas was like in Pioneer days when a penny candy and a straw doll was a haul.
ReplyDeleteYes we are definitely having a white Christmas! For good and bad.
Katherine - I pray you stay electrified! Have a wonderful Christmas!
