I'm It - 5 Things

My friend Grace tagged me today: 5 things most people don't know about me.

1) I was a varsity cheerleader in high school. G-E-N-E-R-A-L-S!

2) I've been in 19 states, but only two foreign countries. Guess which two?

3) I still really dig a clear, booming, deep bass stereo. Goosebumps. Does this thing go to 11?

4) I'm a lefty. I'm one of those eccentric, artsy, and supremely intelligent rarities.

5) My hair is pink. As in Manic Panic Fuschia Shock pink.

Gary, Donna, Susan, Dan , and Traillady - If you haven't done this yet, you're IT!

  1. so hey, i cannot flippin' believe that i connect so well to a former varsity cheerleader. argh. it completely upsets the social harmony of my angsty universe.

and you love bass? you have to, have to, have to come to my house sometime and check out jerry's sound system. at times he has the music so loud that the bass will rumble upstairs from his downstairs entertainment lair. one time a family with young children were visiting and while the dads were watching LOTR with the surround sound on the shaking floors from the bass scared their toddler.

so hey, hope all is going well with you. are you ready for christmas?
    i'll talk to ya soon..........

  2. Hey, can I steal some of your answers on this one too? I was a jock; I LOVE bass (if you can't FEEL it, it ain't loud enough); and I'm a partial lefty (write, eat, draw, etc.).

I'll get to this eventually. Really.

    peace

  3. Yeah, the cheerleader thing really threw me.

At least we have a few things in common. I love a rumbling bass too. And, like Dan, I'm a partial lefty. I bowl, shoot, pitch, and bat righthanded (as if I ever do those things!). I eat, write, and shop lefthanded.

  4. That's cool that there are other ambi-folks. I write, draw, and cook lefthanded, but do everything else righthanded. My mom says that when I was toddler, I would hesitate when reaching for a crayon, obviously trying to decide which hand to use.

And I have blown out more than one set of speakers from a combination of excess volume and bass. Unfortunately, I also blew out my ears. I wear hearing aids now.

  5. (At least) Three other lefties around here? I'm floored. I don't think I have ever been in the presence of more than one other lefty ever in my life. This has got to be some kind of record.

I think every true lefty is ambidextrous because we are forced to be by the world in which we live. Take a hand-operated can opener for instance. It can only be used one way. When I worked at a fabric store, for the first 6 months I struggled through using right-handed scissors with my left hand because I didn't know there was such a thing as lefty scissors. One day my boss saw me and she went over to the scissor section and pulled a pair of lefty scissors off the wall, opened them and told me they would change my life. They did in the sense that I realized there are accomodations made for lefties that I didn't know about.

Dan - Hm. Wouldn't take you for a jock. You seem so intelligent ;-) I guess it's similar to people being surprised I was a cheerleadeer: I must not come across as "dumb blonde" as I really am.

Grace - You SHOP left handed? What precisely do you mean? As in taking things off the shelves with your left hand? I never thought about shopping being a "handed" thing.

Gary - My Dad says my Mom made me a lefty because she is a lefty and she would always put the crayon or fork or whatever into my left hand. But she did this with all 3 of my siblings, too, and they would just switch it to the other hand.

Thanks for all the responses, I'll look forward to hearing from the people I tagged.

  6. Just kidding Lily, it's just that I'm much more likely to be shopping than I ever would be bowling, shooting, or pitching.

    BTW, I can't use a leftie scissors.

  7. Actually, I just discovered there is a name for this 'using one hand for some things and the other for others.' According to Wiki it is: Cross-dominance.

It sounds more interesting than it is. But after glancing at Grace's blog, it made me think of something else. :)

  8. I have to agree with Pam, I am a bit thrown off by the cheerleader thing, The only cheerleader I knew in HS ended up to be the mother of my son's half sister (huh?)

Pink Hair? Seriously? Now that I would like to see!

Bass - yep, I even have one that I play with the amp up high and FEEL the vibes, much fun!

  9. Why is everyone so surprised I was a cheerleader?! I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or be offended ;-)

Anyone ever heard David Foster's Carol of the Bells? That's got some nice bass, believe it or not. My younger brother has a 12hz subwoofer and it is awesome. Makes you feel sick to your stomache awesome!

Grace - I knew you were kidding, but I still never thought of shopping as a one-hand-or-the-other kind of thing ;-)

Dan - You crack me up re:Grace's blog. Funny thing is I do some things with either hand, but I don't think there is anything I primarily do only right-handed, like the rest of you do. Well, actually I guess I mouse right-handed, but my mom who's a lefty has her mouse on the left and her "click" buttons reversed. It's trippy.

Barbara - Maybe when I "come out" on my new blog next year I will post a picture. It's not ALL pink, more like um...stripes or chunks or soemthing. I don't even want to know the "mother of your son's-half-sister" story.

  12. I can't think of 5. But I'll tell you 3.

    1. I was born in England but immigrated to Australia when I was 6 so I sound like an Aussie! and I do consider myself to be Australian.

    2. My daughter got engaged 6 months ago and last night my son got engaged! Two weddings in 2007!

    3. When I'm not blogging I'm a full-on introvert!

3)Started playing basketball in Jr High & even played one yr of college.

  14. Susan - Congrats on your kids engagements. Wow, you'll be a busy mom this year! Any dates set? I think blogging is good for us introverts, we get to interact with people on our own terms. But I have noticed my real-world introversion has improved with the practice I get in the blog world. Not to mention the blog people that I have become friends with in real life, forging connections for me that otherwise never would have existed.

Donna - LOL "the dark side"? What does THAT mean?

    1) You're a NERD! That surprises me.
    2)The suspension doesn't surprise, me
    3)The basketball doesn't surprise me
    4) I never went to sunrise parties, but I'm glad the cheerleaders were entertaining.
    5)You're a nerd!

  15. Ha...yes, I'm a nerd...the sad part is I only recently made that discovery about myself!!!...actually I think I realized it went beyond nerdiness to being a dork...yep, a full fledged dork!! ha

  16. Donna - You crack me up! I don't think you're a dork!
